Introduction to Embroidery

Description:

In this 4 hour workshop you will learn basic stitches that will allow you to create either a traditional sampler following the guidelines provided by history or to create a completely unique piece. With the skills learned you will be able to continue making beautiful pieces of art or simply embellish items of your own. In this class you will begin a piece that you take home to finish. You are encouraged to bring quotes and text that inspires you and to work with found linens.

Class Goals:

Learn basic embroidery stitches.

Prerequisites:

None.

Materials:

You will need the following materials. You can feel free to bring your own, or full kits will be available for purchase from the instructor for an additional cost of .

  • Cotton Dmc Embroidery Floss.
  • Embroidery Needle
  • Embroidery hoop (6-8 in recommended)
  • Water Soluble Fabric Marker
  • Basic Cotton or Linen Fabric

Vintage linens will also be available for purchase.

Instructor Biography:

Joetta Maue is full time artist, curator, and arts writer. Her most recent body of work is a series of embroideries and images exploring the conflicts and contradictions that exist within intimacy. Joetta received her BFA from Ohio State University and her MFA from the University of Massachusetts. Joetta's work has been shown throughout galleries and museums across the country. Joetta has upcoming solo shows at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn, NY and The Art Complex Gallery in Portland, IN. She will also have selected works in the Self- Fabricated exhibit at The Art Complex Museum in Duxbury, MA in 2012. Joetta authors the popular textile arts blog Little Yellowbird as well as being a regular contributor to the online journal Mr. X Stitch & the Textile Arts Center blog.
